Millimetre-wave technology has been applied for collision avoidance radar and this has seen considerable development for commercialisation. Adaptive cruise control (ACC) works by detecting the presence of other automobiles. When there are no vehicles ahead the system keeps a steady speed controlled by the driver but the car approaches other vehicles ahead the speed is controlled to keep a safe distance away. It is hoped that sometime in the near future this technology will be fully developed into cars that can drive themselves with the aim to drastically cut traffic accidents.
